Marks, Pigmentation or Scarring?

Post-acne concerns generally fall into three areas:

Red or Purple Marks

Redness can remain after an inflamed breakout has healed, particularly in fairer skin tones. The skin may feel smooth even though the mark remains visible.

Brown Post-Acne Marks

Inflammation can leave areas of excess pigmentation, particularly in medium and deeper skin tones. Sun exposure can make these marks appear darker or remain visible for longer.

Textural Acne Scarring

True acne scarring changes the surface of the skin. It may appear as shallow dips, deeper indentations, enlarged pores or a generally uneven texture.

Different Types of Indented Scarring

Textural acne scars can vary in shape and depth:

  • Rolling scars create shallow dips or a wave-like texture.

  • Boxcar scars have broader, more defined edges.

  • Ice-pick scars are narrower and extend more deeply into the skin.

Dermapen 4 is our principal treatment where acne has left indentations, enlarged pores or uneven texture.

The treatment creates controlled microchannels within the skin, initiating a natural repair response and encouraging new collagen and elastin production.

Treatment depths can be adjusted across the face so that individual areas receive a more targeted approach. A course allows the skin to remodel progressively, softening the appearance of scarring and improving its overall texture and quality.

Where the main concern is brown post-acne pigmentation, surface congestion or uneven tone, an AlumierMD chemical peel may be more appropriate.

Chemical peels support controlled skin renewal and can be selected according to the condition, sensitivity and pigmentation of the skin.

They may be used independently or alternated with Dermapen when both discolouration and textural scarring are present.

Appropriate homecare and daily sun protection are particularly important when treating post-acne pigmentation.

Celluma LED for Persistent Redness

Where post-acne redness remains visible or the skin is still prone to inflammation, Celluma LED Light Therapy may be incorporated into treatment.

LED offers a gentle, non-invasive option without exfoliation or downtime. It can also support the skin between more corrective treatments where appropriate.
