Botulinum toxin type A works by blocking the signals from the small nerves that pass through to the muscles. Wrinkles are dynamic lines that form when we make exaggerated expressions such as, frowning and squinting, and over time these can become more pronounced. Using small amounts of Botox helps to relax those specific muscles to minimise and soften these fine lines to give a smoother surface. Around the face it helps to soften the effect of the frown lines between the brows as well as those over the forehead. It is also used to create a subtle eyebrow lift and is now licensed to treat crow’s feet around the eyes as well.
Q. How long does the treatment take?
The doctor will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatments for you. The actual injection process takes approximately 20 minutes.
Q. When will I see results?
You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours for moderate to severe frown lines, with results lasting up to 4 months.
Q. Will BOTOX stop me having facial expressions?
BOTOX is a technique-sensitive treatment and it is important to talk to the doctor about the results you want from treatment. Normally you will still be able to show facial expressions albeit they may not be as pronounced or as severe.
Q. Does BOTOX treatment hurt?
Some patients report that being injected with BOTOX feels like a pinch. If you are concerned about discomfort, the doctor may apply a topical numbing cream before administering your treatment.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER BOTOX TREATMENT:
There may be some temporary stinging, throbbing or burning sensation at the injection sites.
There may also be some redness, swelling and mild bruising.
Redness and bruising usually lasts about 48 hours.
Clients will notice a clinical effect between 3-10 days following the injection.
Some diffusion of the toxin will occur after injection. This allows the toxin to permeate into a wider area of the muscle causing it to relax.
In rare cases, there can be a drooping of the eyelid or asymmetry of facial expression. This is not permanent.
The risk of any side effect depends on the muscles injected. The effects of Botox are completely reversible and any side effects are temporary.
Botox cosmetic made by Allergan is the only toxin that we use at The Chelmsford Skin Clinic. We will always see you after 2 weeks when we can assess the results of the Botox and see if any further top-up treatment is necessary.
You may wear makeup, foundation or concealer with sunblock protection 15 minutes after the procedure.
Avoid alcohol for at least 4 hours after treatment.
Do not do vigorous exercise for 24 hours after having had Botox treatment
Stay out of the sun until redness and bruising subsides (usually 48-72 hours).
Patients should avoid aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen or high doses of Vitamin E supplements, etc. for 7-10 days prior to injection because these substances can cause increasing bruising or bleeding at the injection site.
If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another recurrence. A preventative antiviral medication may be prescribed in certain situations.
Do NOT massage injection sites.
